(Groceries, Home decor, Clothing, Toiletries etc.) I don't want every trip to Walmart to have to be broken down into 5 categories. I may choose not to, but I want those as separate from the fixed categories.Īny home supplies like TP just go into groceries.Īs general advice, anything you want to track and reduce should be its own category, but not to the point that it becomes a headache. In a few years when I refinance the mortgage can change, but in the meantime I pay the same amount bi-weekly or monthly.Įlectricity, water, gas, internet, etc. Mortgage, property taxes are more or less fixed. I don't break out emergency repairs from 'maintenance' because my dad always said emergencies were usually just deferred maintenance. Things like renos or upgrades (and I include tools in that) are in savings or categories to build up amounts. I like to separate regular payments into "things I can influence/change" and "things I can't (or can't easily)".

Actually we haven't bught any appliances yet - I am yet to decide whether to put them in Electronics, or make a new Appliances category. Here I categorise computer parts and accessories, phones, tech, appliances. Likewise if I just fancied a new duvet set, I'd put it in this section, but if our sheet is getting worn and holey, I put the replacement in necessities, even if I decided to choose a nicer one. But when we broke too many bowls and I replaced them with whatever I found at ikea, they went in the necessities one. So if I decided to change all our plates for new matching ones, it would go in this section. Then I have one for Deco/improvements - anything that's fun or wasn't strictly needed goes in here. So batteries, lightbulbs, cutlery, plates (to replace lost/broken ones) etc. I divide those purchases into "Household essentials" - anything that I think is boring but necessary goes in here.
